Art and Painting

With the advent of the camera, one great art that is dwindling is the art of making portraits. Even 50 years ago one could see a portrait artist making a portrait of ones grandfather in his study. The portrait artists are highly skilled and the work requires hours of meticulous work. The final outcome of many such portraits can be seen stacked in the attic or in store rooms. But these works of art stand the test of time and hopefully will be back in vogue once again. The art is slowly dying away with only a few well places artists indulging in portraits in their leisure.

The Evolution of Painting

Creative art has always been one of the tools for man to express himself and this has been a trend from ancient times as we have seen in cave paintings like the ones in Altamira in Spain and in many other places. Painting gradually evolved from being just a way to express oneself to being a tool to show the frustrations and depressions of life as was done by Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso. The evolution of art as we see it now focuses on abstract paintings, figures that evoke emotion that vary from horrifying to tempting and younger artists are concentrating more and more on these abstract forms of art.

A canvas full of thoughts

Before man has learned to express through words or by music he has discovered the joy of painting. The numerous paintings made by our ancient ancestors found in the remotest caves all around the world has enabled us to know about the course of civilization man has gone through. With centuries passing by man had mastered over the art and has expressed himself through his strokes of brush. Painting had gone through an intellectual revolution giving birth to impressionism where the inner emotion of the artist has been prioritized unlike the parallel expressionist art form. Painting has inspired other forms of art as well. The beautiful song called Vincent by Don McLean was a musical interpretation of a work of art by Van Gogh.

Art and painting

Interactions serve as the basis of survival for human existence… TRUE!! But can we really express ourselves? Are we genuinely communicating all that is in us? The answer is simply a No! The routine small talks and long chat sessions are not always enough to disclose who we are in reality. Art and painting are two personal habits that bring forth the actuality of a being. The inner contradictions…. Sudden spurt of joy… hidden sorrow and other pent up emotions are best let out via artistic endeavors. To paint or be artistic you need not be an artist well versed with your paint brushes… all you need is to think… all you need is to experience yourself!!

Different pencils like 2B, 4B, 6B, etc are used for the purpose. Portraits, sceneries, birds, animals, as well as human emotions become subject of the sketches. Though the artists do not use color to their works, yet their feelings are very well translated through the black and white texture. That dull and bright combination compliments each other, giving the painting a special brightness. The concept of shading is very important for pencil sketch painting. Painting critiques

Art and paintings come in all sorts of forms in our everyday life. Most people usually admire the beauty if art by phrases such as “It’s nice” or “I love it”. For a professional artist this becomes a little difficult to decipher as most of the art works would then either be nice, lovely or beautiful. Each work has specific areas that may add glamor to the entire piece of work while some areas might just lower the standard a bit. Identifying these areas might help the artist to develop his skills on them and improve on his paintings or art work. Critiques should never worry about the artist’s feelings as then a true expression of thought would be hindered.

Secondly it is important to appoint a curator, whether it is oneself or hiring a professional. Advertising the word out allows artists to develop interests to rent out the space. Having an entry fee for the first few exhibitions attracts the audience and hence a wide array of appreciation as well. Lastly, art galleries are all about showcasing talents and art and hence it is important to keep this spirit growing for a successful venture.

Painting by kids

How boring is it to walk into a house which is decorated with the same boring sunset pictures and paintings? A fun way to redo one's house is by framing paintings that the kids make. While pastel painting and water painting are pretty conventional, a sort of abstract but beautiful paintings are marble paintings. A marble painting is done by filling a tub with water, pouring compatible colors of oil paint into it and then making the surface of the sheet of paper come into contact with the surface of the water. The impression made by the floating oil paint creates a beautiful juxtaposition of colors on the paper, which can later be framed and used at home.

How free is abstract art these days?

Emotions have always been closely related to art. Just as we have abstract emotions which cannot be defined and are free of all conventions, abstract art also takes it stand. Abstract Art is an art not represented by an accurate form of an object. This representation can be different in many ways changing the shape and color. The artist either simplifies or exaggerates an object. Abstract art may be of different styles. However the main forms that stand out are Cubism, Neoclassicism, and Abstract Expressionism.

The question that mostly arises is how free can abstract art be? Abstract art was modernized due to the limits of cubism and other forms which currently do not have a fixed standard convention that is followed. Will this constant expansion evolve art or just create chaos?

Art, or art-deco?

The world of art and painting is a ridiculously expensive world to be living in. Paintings sell in the millions, and many people who are thus enabled, use it as a future investment. People are employed by such individuals to scour for new talent and invest in them, in hopes that they become famous in the future.

The art world is also increasing by leaps and bounds. Sculptures and figurines sell for ludicrous amounts, only to end up in a private collection which nobody else will ever see. Art is meant for the world to appreciate, and a private collection kind of spoils the point. Most such collectors have no appreciation for art, and use it simply as an investment.

The Early History of Abstract Art

Abstract art refers to the visual rendition of an artist’s thoughts or feelings that may not be easily comprehended by the viewer. In case of abstract painting, the object of the painter is portrayed through a style that may not relate to anything directly, but only be suggestive of it.
The earliest signs of abstract art were found in pottery, textiles, paintings on rocks, and inscriptions. They usually had a symbolic significance, and were said to originate in the Islamic culture wherein the direct depiction of the human form was, in a way, forbidden.
Some of the early art movements that had an influence on the origin of abstract art in the nineteenth century are Romanticism, Impressionism and Expressionism. During this period artists were recipients of private patronage. Emphasis on the visual sensation, rather than the object itself, was a characteristic of this form of art. Some of the artists aimed at making a logical construct of reality based on a view from a particular point.
In the later part of the nineteenth century, schools such as modernism and mysticism also had a strong influence on abstract art. This led to the popularization of geometric abstract styles in the twentieth century.

The Basics of Oil Painting

Painting with pigments that are bound with a medium of drying oil is known as oil painting. In Europe, where this form of painting grew popular in the early modern era, linseed oil is the popular variant used. Linseed was often boiled with pine resin or frankincence and turned into ‘varnish’. This substance was the reason behind the glossy feel that a painting attained.
An artist making an oil painting initiates the work by taking a canvas and sketching the theme or subject with a piece of charcoal. Some artists also use thinned paint for this purpose. Oil paints usually have a mixture of linseed oil, mineral spirits or other forms of spirit that helps in the creation of a thinner, faster or slower drying paint, as required.
A basic tenet of oil painting is that each layer of paint must contain more oil than the previous layer. This ensures proper drying, which would not be possible if the layer on top has less oil. On the contrary, the paint would begin to crack and peel.
The traditional method of making an oil painting comprises the use of a paint brush. However, variations include the use of palette knives or rags as well.
